An office lockout costs time and money: staff waiting, customers turned away, deliveries missed. Here's how to resolve it and prevent it.
First steps
- Check whether another key holder can come in
- Contact your building management, which may hold a master key
- Check any alternative entrances you're authorized to use
Calling a commercial locksmith
Tell the locksmith the type of door (glass storefront, steel, wood), the lock and any access control system. Have proof that you're authorized to enter, such as a lease, business license or ID that matches business records.
Prevention
- Keep a key log and collect keys when staff leave
- Consider keypad or digital locks so codes replace keys
- Use a master key system so managers can open any door
- Rekey when keys go missing
